Rockcliffe
A Little Jewel
The attractive seaside village of Rockcliffe, tucked around a narrow, shallow bay, overlooks Rough Island and the hills beyond.
Well away from the river channel, the small beach is safe for families, and the excitement of rock pools will keep the children happy for ages. For the keen angler, sea angling from the rocks around the bay is a great way to while away the time, though keeping an eye on the temperament of the waters and keeping well out of danger.Care should also be taken when crossing the wide mud estuary as the rising tide can travel at considerable speed across the flats.
The coastal walk from Rockcliffe to Kippford is but a mile and a half of easy walking, and most enjoyable. In the opposite direction, the walk from the west side of the bay to Castle Point is equally attractive but a bit more strenuous, with some stiles to cross.
The village has a tearoom, a hotel and several Bed and Breakfast places nearby. There is also camping at Castle Point Caravan Park in Rockcliffe, and also in nearby Kippford.
Within the grounds of the Baron's Craig Hotel the Rockcliffe Gallery exhibits paintings by local artists.
If you tire of the seaside and want to travel inland, there are forest walks in the vicinity, or you can travel along the coast to Mersehead RSPB Bird Sanctuary to spend a pleasant few hours in the bird hides, seeing the birds and learning more of the various species which include lapwings, skylarks, wigeons, pintails, and buntings, and in the autumn and winter the barnacle and pink-footed geese.
