Dalbeattie
The Valley Of The Silver BirchDalbeattie, a small country town of 4000 people, nestling in the valley of the river Urr, is the shopping and amenity centre for the popular Colvend Coast holiday area.
The name Dalbeattie is derived from a Gaelic term meaning 'Valley of the Silver Birch' which reflects the mixed and varied nature of the surrounding countryside. Whilst the river valley is arable and fertile, much of the higher ground enfolding it is formed from woodland and moor.
Contained in the town is a variety of small family businesses catering for all daily needs and providing a warm and friendly service to the community and its welcome visitors. Dalbeattie people are friendly and helpful, and like to greet you with a cheery 'Good morning' or 'Hello'.
There are a number of hotels and guest houses in Dalbeattie, providing comfortable accommodation. A caravan site is conveniently situated close to the town centre, with another just on the outskirts. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes and takeaways to suit most tastes. Local produce is of a high quality and is frequently on the menu.
The town provides doctors, veterinary surgeries, a Post Office, Police and Fire Stations, a number of banks and a Library. Visitors are most welcome to apply for Library membership, or to use it's excellent facilities if researching their family tree.
Dalbeattie makes an ideal base to explore the many country and forest walks, or for golfing, fishing, birdwatching, or just relaxing by the coast. And within Dalbeattie Forest is the now internationally famous 7Stanes Mountain Bike Trail with the renowned Slab, a granite challenge to all serious mountain bikers!
Several museums, art galleries, historic houses, castles and beautiful gardens are nearby, so there is always plenty to do from Dalbeattie as your holiday base.
