Kippford: Hestan Island can be reached from Almorness Point or from Redhaven Beach at Auchencairn. It is a privately owned island with a lighthouse which is now solar powered and automatic. The island is steeped in history about smuggling. The large cave on the west side is worth a visit, as is Elephant Rock, a completely natural phenomenon. Be sure to consult an up-to-date tide table first, and add on 25 minutes for the tide at Hestan.

Kippford: The Solway Firth extends from east of Dumfries, and southwards along the Colvend Coast onward to Kirkcudbright. There is a beach of sand, shingle and rocks at Kippford. It is a half-mile walk.

Rockcliffe: At Rockcliffe Bay there are a wealth of interesting things to do along the seashore. Care must be taken with the tide, however, as it can rush in quickly along the long flat Solway estuary. When the tide is out there is a fair amount of muddy sand left behind, and if children are playing in it they will become quite mucky. The rocks around the Bay provide great interest in the search for crabs and other sea creatures and plants. At Castle Point there is a beach of sand and rocks. There is a one-mile footpath to the beach.
